Iíve been fortunate to make four fishing trips to Alaska thanks to the hospitality of Bob Schalkle. His fishing camp is on the Kenai River, one of the premier Alaskan salmon fishing rivers.
It is hard to comprehend the immense size and beauty of Alaska, which is truly the last frontier. With a land mass equal in size to 1/3rd of the lower 48 states distance takes on a new meaning which became quite evident when I drove to the Arctic Circle in an old Ford Taurus with one bald tire. Flying around Mt. McKinley with a bush pilot, hiking in Denali National Park and a glacier cruise on Prince William Sound are just a few of the many side trips that Iíve taken when not fishing.
It is always bittersweet flying home with 60-70 lbs of fresh salmon, some great photos and fond memories of this magnificent state.
